About Albert Handell

ALBERT HANDELL was born in Brooklyn, New York in 1937. At an early age, a favorite activity of his was drawing with chalks on the city streets. He began formal studies of drawing and anatomy at the age of sixteen. In 1954, he enrolled at the Art Students League of New York City to study drawing and anatomy with the late Louis Priscilla and the late Robert Ward Johnson, and later studied painting for two years with Frank Mason. From 1961 to 1965, Mr. Handell lived and traveled in Europe. In Paris, he painted independently in his own studio, working from the model at L’Ecole de la Grande Chaumiere and at the Louvre, copying the old masters. For more, visit www.AlbertHandell.com.

Above is a recent video interview with Mr Handell.

About the Workshop

  • Sunday 5-7PM: Our first meeting at the studio. At that time, Albert will give out important information on en plein air painting and portability for both pastels and oils, an explanation of sunny and grey day lighting conditions and an overall view of the week’s schedule, including maps to various painting locations, followed by our first workshop dinner. (Individual checks please.)
  • Our daily schedule for Monday through Friday:
    • Morning 9AM till noon: Paint-Along or demonstration by Albert
    • Afternoon 2-5PM: Paint on location with help at the easel
    • Evening 7-9PM: Daily studio critique plus career building
  • Saturday 9AM-12PM: An in-depth personal farewell critique for each individual artist. The object being so you can work better after the week is ended.

Our workshop coordinator is Michael Chesley Johnson, phone: 575.267.2450, email: mcj.painter@gmail.com

In this program, enrollment will be limited to 14 participating artists or fewer.

How is this Mentoring Program Different from His Typical Painting Workshop?

This 6-day program starts with our first half-day meeting on SUNDAY 5:00-7:00PM at the Gandolfo Studio, followed by our first dinner at REDS Restaurant and ends with an individual in-depth farewell critique on SATURDAY and done by noon.

Each day participants will paint together at designated locations that Mr. Handell knows intimately. As you paint alongside Mr. Handell, he will show you step-by-step how he starts and works through a painting till finish. You will see for yourself what and how he emphasizes what is important, what “un-essentials” he leaves out (which is also very important) and how he keeps to the theme of the painting till finished. If you wish, you will be able to paint the same subjects he does, which gives you a realization of painting that is unique.

In the afternoon he will give help at each artist’s easel.

Each evening participants will meet to review the day’s painting, have nightly critiques, and receive suggestions for the next day’s painting, and all career-building information will be kept to the evenings.

Career Building – Discussed and Explained in Detail in the Evening Sessions

Mr. Handell will first explain how he has built his own career and give you important insights and information on how to build yours. He will then answer all individual questions and give you insights from his extensive experience as an artist, judge and juror of many national exhibitions, which will give you an idea and help as to where you should exhibit. You might be surprised by the insights revealed.

Also information on:

  • How to find and get into a good gallery
  • Explaining what is a “good gallery”
  • What to expect from your gallery
  • What is your obligation to your gallery

Also covered (partial listing):

  • What regional and/or national shows should one enter both as a pastelist or as an oil painter (you will find this information surprising)
  • The importance of “being-in-print” (how to go about getting into print, including both magazine articles and books)
  • What makes up an impressive portfolio
  • Should I join a co-op and what makes a good co-op?
  • How to organize your office (very important)
  • The tax advantages of declaring yourself an artist (an individual contractor) even though sales of paintings may be minimal or none at all – this part of the program alone, especially for the future, can be worth the price of the program many times over!

Yet there is much, much more – all presented to you in the evenings after the day’s painting.

Who is this Workshop For?

The mentoring program is designed for those who want an “after workshop” experience; it is open to anyone who has either taken a workshop with Mr. Handell, or has taken at least one workshop with an artist who gives painting workshops in pastels or oils.

Refund Policy

After January 12, 2017, and your tuition has been paid in full, a full refund minus the nonrefundable deposit is offered to you for any reason, at any time, until March 2, 2017, 10 days prior to the first day of the program. Due to the very rare and low artist/student ratio, no cash or credit refunds can be offered after this date.
